Association between Morningness-Eveningness and Behavioral/Emotional Problems among Adolescents
http://jbr.sagepub.com/cgi/content/abstract/22/3/268
This recent article from the Journal of Biological Rhythms, June 2007, studied 1332 adolescents and documents the association between 'eveningness' and teen emotional/behavioral problems and risk taking behaviors.  It is a particularly notable article because of the very large number of students who were studied and the fact that students were recruited randomly from the school system.  Although sleep loss alone may not be the sole factor accounting for these problems it is certainly a contributing factor.  Parents should be aware that 'night owl' teens may be at greater than average risk for emotional problems including suicidality, substance abuse and other emotional/behavioral issues.  Addressing teen sleep problems AND acknowledging and treating emotional/behavioral problems will improve teen health and wellbeing.
